Expensive carpets

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Well, everyone, it’s Monday, and you know what that means.

Any and all fancy oak furniture featured in this scene is courtesy of the fine people at Tichmarsh & Goodwin. Thanks, mum, for keeping copies of English Home around the house.

Intermission: Snowmelt

Monday, July 20th, 2009

As promised, here’s a little intermission adventure, sandwiched neatly between chapters four and five. The scene’s been brewing for ages and I was delighted to get to use it, even if characteristically little goes on in it.

As an opportunity to step outside of the main story, the approach I took to drawing this was pretty much the reverse of my usual one. Ironborn is drawn meticulously in pencils, using storyboards, sketches, and lots of eraser work; this was drawn recklessly in felt-tip, straight off my head, from simple dialogue notes. Ironborn uses a rather rigid page plan with digital panelling and lettering; this is a lot more open, and lettered by hand (hopefully legibly so). Finally, Ironborn takes place in early autumn; this takes place in early spring. (Not of the same year, of course…)

Our main feature will resume shortly. In the meantime, enjoy the change of pace!

Off again

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

For practical (vacational) reasons, I will spend the next two weeks without my computer and Ironborn stuff. So that’s a hiccup in the schedule for you, but this time I intend to bring something back with me! It’s a short intermission story that fits rather nicely into the present juncture of the plot.

And look, this guy RidderHalfrijm drew a wonderful (and slightly uncanny) picture of Opal! It is here and is officially my first piece of fanart. A little Ghost in the Shell, isn’t she?
